Joe Szuecs musical instrument inventions

Joe Szuecs is a local musician and engineer, and will be demonstrating his Drummer in a Suitcase machine.  Not to be missed!!

From Joe:

Fundamentally, I am a Maker.

I primarily work with wood and electronics, although most projects incorporate other materials as well. My workshop is equipped with standard woodworking equipment along with CNC machines and a laser cutter.

Along with the making of physical things, I am also a jazz guitarist. I try to integrate my passions of making and music whenever I can. For example, in projects like the Drummer in a Suitcase project.

From 2006 to 2017, I provided software development and fabrication services to Maker Faire. I also exhibited numerous award winning projects.

I currently serve as the President of the Board of Chimera Arts Maker Space in Sebastopol, CA. Chimera Arts provides facilities and training to our local maker community.

In October 2018, I produced the first Maker Music Festival. A celebration of people that make their own instruments.

sing-along with

Mrs. Foley-Beining!

Time to sing with our wonderful music teacher!  This is a great time for us all to come together and sing before school is out.  6th graders--lead us in your favorite song from kindergarten?  TK and K, how about your favorite song?

About our music teacher:

I am Kate Foley-Beining and I have been the music enrichment teacher at West Side School since around 2005 when I helped out with piano accompaniment for the Winter Program while my three kids were in school here. I studied music, majoring in piano, at the University of Iowa. Then I switched to German and got my doctorate at UCLA, which explains why I am also an adjunct professor of German at SSU and the JC. Teaching kids music, singing, dancing and rhythm, putting instruments in their hands, and giving them the reins for song ideas, arrangements or music theater brings me such joy!

Did you know that you can make ink out of plants growing in your yard?  Join Ms. Jessica and artist Judi Pettite  (and if the wifi works in the school garden, Miss Stefanie might join us too!) and learn about all things ink!  Best for upper grades, or lower grades with parent help.

About Ms. Judi:

Judi Pettite is an artist, researcher and writer living in the sierra foothills of California. In the field, studio or on the road, she is interested in what motivates people to work with natural materials, how they forage or cultivate these materials and how this creativity is expressed. Her own work is an exploration of the pigments she processes while playing with non objective abstraction and narrative vignettes.
